The Big Jo

The special prosecutor for the insurrection - Jo Eun-seok (조은석) - held a press conference yesterday to report on the results of his team's investigations. On the whole he's receiving high marks, but there are two areas of criticism that are being raised by observers.

The first is that he cleared Yoon's wife of any involvement which, let's be honest, is a little difficult to swallow. After the failed insurrection, Yoon's wife (Kim Keun-hee) apparently screamed at him, "너 때문에 다 망쳤다" (i.e. "you ruined everything"). As the lawyer Kim Kyung-ho (김경호) points out, if she had nothing to do with planning the insurrection, she would be more likely to say, "What have you done now?" or "What's going on?" etc. "You ruined everything" sounds more like someone who was already involved.

Jo found no evidence of Kim's involvement - e.g. she was not present during her husband's drunken binges with the generals (where, apparently, he threatened to shoot Han Dong-hoon if he got the chance). But the finality of the "no evidence of involvement" has irked Democrats.

Jo also found no evidence of involvement by the Judiciary (i.e. Cho Hee-dae). But this was after written questions were submitted and responses were returned (not by raids, intrusive investigations etc).

There are discussions regarding a second round of investigations.
